Big Canoe Program

The Big Canoe Program is designed to provide a solid foundation of knowledge and skill for safe and efficient Big Canoe Paddling. The program recognizes the two distinct groups it is designed for: Paddlers and Leaders. For the purposes of this course a Big Canoe is any canoe being paddled by 4 or more people.

Skills Program Descriptions

Big Canoe Skills Introduction

Aim

  1. To introduce novices to the big canoe, specifically to the middle and bow positions.
  2. To introduce the basic strokes: forward, reverse, check/stop, Drop Skeg and low brace to safely assist with propelling the canoe forward, backing up, stopping and docking. An optional manoeuver may be introduced to assist with moving the canoe sideways (sideward displacement) using draws and pries as an optional progression to the Intermediate Leader position.
  3. Participants will rotate through the middle and bow position in a big canoe with a Big Canoe instructor or an Intermediate or Advanced Big Canoe leader in the stern.

Prerequisites

No prior experience required.

6 hours (depending on number of participants)

Big Canoe Skills Intermediate Leader

Aim

  1. To introduce big canoe paddling to those individuals who have a basic knowledge of paddling strokes.
  2. To gain knowledge and skill for the stern position in the big canoe.
  3. To gain the skill to lead novices in a big canoe on easy water (see definition of location).

Prerequisites

Intro Lake Tandem paddler or Big Canoe Paddler (with optional draws and pries).

Current Basic First Aid (8 hours).

Typical Course Length

6-8 hours (dependant on number of participants)

If adding the optional strokes:

  • Add one hour if all participants have completed the optional strokes and manoeuvres from Intro Big Canoe Paddler section.
  • Add 2 hours if the participants have not completed the optional strokes and manoeuvres section for the Intro Big Canoe Paddler. These strokes will have to be taught at this level.

Big Canoe Skills Advanced Leader

Aim

  1. To effectively paddle all positions in the big canoe.
  2. Lead a big canoe on a wider variety of water conditions on day trip.
  3. Perform advanced manoeuvres in a big canoe.
  4. Gain an in-depth knowledge of how to paddle a big canoe.

Prerequisites

  • Intermediate Tandem Paddler; and
  • Intermediate Big Canoe Leader

Instructor Program Descriptions

Big Canoe Instructor Intermediate

Aim

To offer a national certification for Big Canoe Skills Introduction (Big Canoe Paddlers) and Big Canoe Skills Intermediate (Big Canoe Intermediate Leaders).

Prerequisites

  • Intermediate Lake Tandem Instructor or equivalent
  • Intermediate Lake Solo Instructor or strong solo skills
  • Intermediate Skills Big Canoe (Leader); and
  • Advanced Skills Big Canoe (Leader)

Typical Course Length

2.5 days

 

Big Canoe Instructor Advanced

Aim

To offer a national certification for Big Canoe Skills Introduction (Big Canoe Paddlers), Big Canoe Skills Intermediate (Big Canoe Intermediate Leaders) and Big Canoe Skills Advanced (Big Canoe Advanced Leader).

Big Canoe Instructor Intermediate

Typical Course Length

3.5 days

Moving Water, Coastal Canoeing and Tripping Skill endorsements are available if participants wish to travel on rivers, oceans and trip with the big canoe. Moving water skills, tides, currents, open water safety and knowledge, and tripping skills are not taught in these courses.
