Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer Application

If you love to teach sea kayaking and have a history of providing excellent instructional experiences for your students, then you should consider becoming a Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer (IT). Or, if you are currently a Paddle Canada IT, you may be able to achieve a Sea Kayak IT certification based on your IT experience.

There are two ways to become a Sea Kayak IT. The traditional method involves completing all of the prerequisites and the online IT training before beginning apprenticing with one or more IT mentors. There are limited circumstances in which you can begin your IT development without all the prerequisites; see the IT Manual and our program manual for current details.

Alternatively, the IT transfer method allows existing Paddle Canada ITs, in certain circumstances, to skip the apprenticeships in recognition of previous IT training (in Sea Kayak or any other stream). If you meet all the prerequisites for this IT certification and have achieved an equivalent IT certification in any Paddle Canada stream then you can apply to use the IT transfer method.

You can contact the Program Committee before being accepted into the IT development program to receive access to the relevant IT online training module. Completing the module and the assigned project typically takes 1-2 weeks. If you have previously completed that module as part of another Paddle Canada IT program, you will not need to redo it.

Whether you are following the traditional or the IT transfer method, your first step is to complete this application!

This form has multiple pages. In order to complete this application you will need the following:

your Paddle Canada member number,
why you want to become an IT,
your prerequisite skills certification, the date it occurred, its course number, and the instructor’s name,
your prerequisite instructor certification, the date it occurred, its course number, and the IT’s name,
your prerequisite IT certification (if applicable), the date it occurred, its course number, and the IT’s name,
all of the prerequisite skills courses you have taught, their course dates, their course numbers, and the number of student in each course, and
all of the prerequisite instructor courses you have taught (if applicable), their course dates, their course numbers, and the number of student in each course.

Under normal circumstances you can expect to hear back within 2-3 weeks regarding your application. Any incomplete information on the form will delay processing.

Waterfront Kayak Instructor Trainer

At least 18 years of age
Membership: Current Paddle Canada membership and Provincial/Territorial membership (where required).
Skills Certification: Level-1 Sea Kayak skills
Instructor Certification: Basic Kayak Instructor
Teaching Experience: A minimum of two or more Basic Kayak Skills courses within the past three years, being the lead instructor on at least two of those courses.

These are the prerequisites for the IT certification you seek.

Basic Kayak Instructor Trainer

At least 18 years of age
Membership: Current Paddle Canada membership and Provincial/Territorial membership (where required).
Skills Certification: Level-2 Sea Kayak skills
Instructor Certification: Level-1 Sea Kayak Instructor
Teaching Experience: Taught a minimum of six or more Basic Skills courses within the past four years, being the lead instructor on at least three of those courses.

These are the prerequisites for the IT certification you seek.

There are limited circumstances in which you can begin your IT development without all the prerequisites. Please see the IT Manual and our program manual for current details.

Kayak Rolling Instructor Trainer

At least 18 years of age
Membership: Current Paddle Canada membership and Provincial/Territorial membership (where required).
Skills Certification: Successful completion of the Kayak Rolling clinic.
Instructor Certification: Level-1 Sea Kayak Instructor, and Kayak Rolling Instructor
Teaching Experience: A minimum of two or more Kayak Rolling clinics within the past three years, being the lead instructor on at least two of those clinics. All clinics must have had at least three participants in each.

Level-1 Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer

At least 18 years of age
Membership: Current Paddle Canada membership and Provincial/Territorial membership (where required).
Skills Certification: Level-3 Sea Kayak skills
Instructor Certification: Level-2 Sea Kayak Instructor
Teaching Experience: Taught a minimum of six or more Level-1 Skills courses within the past four years, being the lead instructor on at least three of those courses.

Level-2 Sea Kayak Instructor Trainer

Membership: Current Paddle Canada membership and Provincial/Territorial membership (where required).
Skills Certification: Level-4 Sea Kayak skills
Instructor Certification: Level-3 Sea Kayak Instructor
Taught a minimum of four Level-2 Skills courses within the past six years, being the lead instructor on at least two of those courses.
IT Experience: Taught a minimum of two, Level-1 Instructor courses in the past four years, being the lead instructor on one. All courses must have at least three candidates in each.

Skills Certification: Level-4 Sea Kayak skills
Instructor Certification: Level-4 Sea Kayak Instructor
Teaching Experience: Taught two or more Level-4 Skills courses within the past six years, being the lead instructor on at least one of those courses.
IT Experience: Taught, as a lead instructor, a minimum of one Level-2 Instructor course. The course must have at least three candidates.

Paddle Canada Instructor Trainer Commitment

Instructor Trainers represent the pinnacle of instruction certification in Canada. Paddle Canada knows it is critical for instructor-trainers to remain active and current, as it is their knowledge, skills and experience that is passed down to instructors, and from there to paddlers.

As leaders in the paddling community, instructor trainers have additional responsibilities to the paddling community and Paddle Canada, including meaningful contribution to the growth and development of the program and to their local paddling community, as well as development of instructors and other instructor trainers.
