For novice-level sea kayak training, such as Paddle Canada Level 1 skills, as well as for sea kayak, canoe and SUP instructor courses, the calm, sheltered waters of the Michipicoten River offer ideal training ground. There’s plenty of sandy, forested shoreline to explore with easy access from our protected riverfront beach.

Where the river flows into Lake Superior, you’ll discover the challenges and rewards of paddling in moving water, including eddies and standing waves—similar to conditions experienced in tidal areas. These dynamic waters create ideal conditions for intermediate- to advanced-level sea kayak training, including Paddle Canada Level 2 and Level 3 skills. If you’re looking for specialized training in surf kayaking or rock-garden paddling you’ll find it just beyond the river mouth, with the option of practicing your skills in standing waves or beach surf breaks and navigating the confused waters along the shore. You’ll quickly realize that Lake Superior is indeed a freshwater sea, capable of delivering ocean-like conditions in the heart of the continent. If wilderness tripping is what you’re after, we’re within easy striking distance of some of the wildest coastline in the world for multi-day backcountry trips.
