Youth Kayak Camp Coordinator

Job Summary

At Jericho Beach Kayak our goal is to inspire deeper connections to the great outdoors and one-another.

The Kayak Camp Coordinators are responsible for ensuring our summer kayak camps are an amazing experience for our participants and parents or guardians. Prior to the start of camps in July they will be responsible for planning and preparing for camps, including developing new activities, marketing materials and preparing equipment. They will also assist in delivering school group kayaking programs, in order to gain experience working with youth on the water.

During the camp season, with the oversight of the School Director, they will be responsible for the smooth operation of youth camp programs at our Jericho Beach location. As part of the team of instructors, they will also run our kayak camps every week throughout the summer. Most of the work time is spent with participants on the beach or on the water at Jericho, but some pre-program time will be spent on shore preparing for programs.

The position will start in a part time capacity on May 22. Full time work will be from June 26 through September 1.
Regular hours during camp season will be Mondays to Fridays 8:15-4:15 (some weeks 8:45-4:45). Weekend work might be applicable during some weeks.
If desired candidates can start working in April or May in a kayak instructor role working on tours, lessons and group programs.

About the Position
Primary responsibilities
• Ensuring participants have an enjoyable, safe and memorable experience in our youth lessons and camps.
• Leading programs according to Jericho Beach Kayak and Paddle Canada outlines, and risk management policies.
• Running youth camp programs, including but not limited to:
o Leading on-water and off-water games and activities
o Demonstrating and teaching kayaking skills in a fun and engaging way
o Communicating with parents and partners.
o Preparing and cleaning up equipment used in programs. This includes lifting and moving kayaks and associated gear at the beginning and end of each shift
o Ensuring all required reporting is done each day and weekly course paperwork completed.

Additional responsibilities
• Developing fun activities that showcase the natural and cultural history of our local area
• Attending mandatory training sessions
• Reviewing and revising course outlines and program descriptions
• Volunteer recruitment and supervision

Required Education, Skills or Certification

Qualifications & Requirements
• Ability to lift 75+ lbs.
• Strong decision-making and leadership skills.
• Excellent in-person communication and group management skills
• In process or completed degree or diploma in education, youth work, outdoor recreation, human kinetics, tourism, biology, geography or other related discipline is an asset
• Enjoy working with youth ages 7-15 yrs and being outside
• Have or willing to obtain a minimum:
o Paddle Canada Basic Sea Kayak Instructor certification
o First Aid and CPR training, as required by Paddle Canada certification
(opportunities to achieve some certifications are available through Jericho Beach Kayak each spring)
• Clean criminal record check (vulnerable sector)

Partial funding for this position requires applicants:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
• be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

Experience Required

Experience Required:
• Passion and experience in kayaking and/or ocean-based recreation or outdoor education.
• Experience teaching or leading youth programs, especially day camps or outdoor experiences

About Jericho Beach Kayak
Jericho Beach Kayak Centre is conveniently located right at beautiful Jericho Beach in Vancouver within the Jericho Sailing Centre.
We are proud to build on the 39 years history of Ecomarine and to continue the tradition of being one of the top paddling schools and kayak rental locations. Our sister kayak location is Deep Cove Kayak on the North Shore.
We employ a team of about 30-35 Paddle Canada certified Instructors and SKGABC Guides every season. Many are part-time instructors with a core group of staff who work full-time.
We are continuing Ecomarine’s tradition of running fun and quality kayak summer camps for kids and youth. We offer both full-day camps as well as half-day camps.
