Stand Up Paddleboard Guide

Job Summary

You will be responsible for teaching or guiding Stand Up Paddleboarding at the Beginner or Intermediate level. You will possess the ability to teach in a relaxed, clear and confident manner to a variety of participants and demographics. As well as having strong communication, decision making, logistical, and organizational skills, you have the ability to remain calm, think clearly and act quickly in case of an emergency.

This is a casual position and flexibility is required. Program times vary and may be on days and evenings during the week, weekends and holidays. Hours of work per week are dependent on the waterfront program schedule and registration numbers.

In this role, you will have extensive on-water time to further develop and grow your SUP skill set, receive on-going coaching and feedback from other SUP leaders, opportunities to participate in photoshoots and/or attend additional trips, and develop your leadership and interpretive skills as well as support our community projects like Girls on Boards.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
– Support and lead 90 min -6 hour paddleboard tours in the Sidney, BC area.
– Create a safe and inclusive environment for all participants
– Teach guests the basics of SUP and water safety, assist guests when entering/exiting and moving paddleboards, adhere to all safety protocols, preparation of equipment,
routine maintenance, etc.
– Lead interesting and informative discussions on natural history, marine environment, flora and fauna, conservation issues, etc.
– Understand and consistently perform all responsibilities associated with our safety protocols and program procedures
– Confirm all equipment used is in appropriate working condition
– Lead and motivate participants with a high level of enthusiasm and a positive attitude
– Manage time well
– Work with Adventure Coordinator and Owner to ensure the smooth delivery of all BJF SUP programs

Blue Jellyfish SUP Adventures will be hiring on a preferential basis aiming to employ a youth who self-identifies as being part of groups that are underrepresented or have additional barriers to the labour market.

Required Education, Skills or Certification

– Have experience leading and teaching individuals and groups of a wide variety of ages in outdoor or recreational programs
– You are a Paddle Canada Flatwater Instructor (preferred) or equivalent. Paddle Canada Flatwater SUP skills will be considered and certification fees paid for candidates
with suitable guiding experience (example: former sea kayak/canoe guides)
– Have a current Emergency First Aid, CPR Level C & AED (certifications may be obtained or fees paid for candidates with suitable experience)
– Demonstrate extensive paddling experience and navigational skills, especially in an ocean environment
– Enjoy working in a collaborative team environment.
– Possess the ability and willingness to lead interesting and informative discussions on natural history, marine environment, flora and fauna, conservation issues, etc.
– Demonstrate strong leadership abilities in a variety of situations, excellent interpersonal and communication skills with particular focus on guest interactions, neat
presence including presentable clothing and personal grooming.
– Someone who is comfortable with flexible scheduling (due to weather) and okay working evenings, weekends and holidays vs. a standard mon-fri, 9-5
