Camping Basics Instructor

This course provides national certification in the instruction and administration of the Paddle Canada Camping Basics course.

A Camping Basics Instructor is certified to:

  • conduct Paddle Canada Camping Basics skills courses and certify students at that level, and
  • assist on a Wilderness Camping skills course.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum Age Requirement
    • At least 16 years of age.
  • Skills Certification
    • Wilderness Camping skills certification
    • One of the following paddling skills certifications:
      • Intro Lakewater or Moving Water Canoe skills,
      • Basic Sea Kayak skills,
      • Basic Stand Up Paddleboard skills, or
      • Intermediate River Kayak skills.
    • River Rescue Training is strongly recommended for those offering any skills course on moving water.
  • Instructor Certification
    • None
  • First Aid Certification
    • Current certification in first aid (14 hours).
  • Teaching Experience
    • None
  • Camping and Paddling Experience
    • Significant camping experience in a wide variety of conditions and locations.
    • A minimum of 6 camping trips with a total combination of 10 nights or more camping. It is not necessary that these trips involve paddling.

Typical Course Length

20 hours of instruction (2.5 days).


Wilderness Camping Instructor

This course provides national certification in the instruction and administration of the Paddle Canada Wilderness Camping skills course.

The Wilderness Camping Instructor is certified to:

  • conduct the Paddle Canada Camping Basics and Wilderness Camping courses and certify students at those levels,
  • present the Expedition Camping Module,
  • assist a Camping Leadership Instructor on a Camping Leadership course, and
  • assist a Camping Basics Instructor Trainer on a Camping Basics Instructor course.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum Age Requirement
    • At least 18 years of age.
  • Skills Certification
    • Paddle Canada Camping Leadership skills certification.
    • One of the following paddling skills certification:
      • Intermediate Lake or Intro Moving Water Canoe skills,
      • Level-1 Sea Kayak skills,
      • Advanced Flatwater Stand Up Paddleboard skills, or
      • Intermediate River Kayak skills.
    • River Rescue Training is strongly recommended for those offering any skills course on moving water.
  • Instructor Certification
    • Camping Basics Instructor highly suggested.
  • First Aid Certification
    • Current Wilderness first aid (minimum 16 hours).
  • Teaching Experience
    • None, though it is highly recommended that the prospective candidate has taught a minimum of two Camping Basics skills courses within the past three years, being the lead instructor on at least one of those courses.
  • Camping and Paddling Experience
    • A log demonstrating a minimum of 6 camping trips with a total combination of 12 nights or more camping. It is not necessary that these trips involve paddling.
    • 30 days paddling experience in at least Level-1 conditions (including overnights).

Typical Course Length

32 hours of instruction (4 days).


Camping Leadership Instructor

The course provides national certification in the instruction and administration of the Paddle Canada Camping Leadership skills course.

The Camping Leadership Instructor is certified to:

  • conduct the Paddle Canada Camping Basics, Wilderness Camping, and Camping Leadership courses and certify students at those levels,
  • present the Expedition Camping Module,
  • assist a Wilderness Camping Instructor Trainer on a Wilderness Camping Instructor course, and
  • assist a Camping Basics Instructor Trainer on a Camping Basics Instructor course.

Prerequisites

  • Minimum Age Requirement
    • At least 18 years of age.
  • Skills Certification
    • Paddle Canada Camping Leadership skills certification.
    • One of the following paddling skills certification:
      • Intermediate Canoe skills,
      • Intermediate River Kayak skills,
      • Sea Kayak Level-2 skills,
      • Touring 1 Stand Up Paddleboard skills,
      • River 1 Stand Up Paddleboard skills, or
      • Surf 1 Stand Up Paddleboard skills.
    • River Rescue Training is strongly recommended for those offering any skills course on moving water.
  • Instructor Certification
    • Paddle Canada Wilderness Camping Instructor.
  • First Aid Certification
    • Current wilderness first aid (16 hours).
  • Teaching Experience
    • The candidate will have a significant teaching experience as a Wilderness Camping Instructor in a wide variety of conditions and locations including a minimum of 15 days of logged instruction of Wilderness Camping curriculum (either courses or clinics).
    • A minimum of two Wilderness Camping courses, within the past three years, being the lead instructor on both courses. These two courses count toward the 15 logged days.
  • Camping and Paddling Experience
    • A log demonstrating a minimum of 8 camping trips with a total combination of 12 nights or more camping. It is not necessary that these trips involve paddling.
    • Significant paddling experience in a wide variety of conditions and locations.
