Introduction to Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing Instructor

Discipline: Canoeing Program: Lake Canoe Stream: Instructor Development

Introduction to Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing Instructor is the typical entry point into the Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Instructor program. As such, the fundamentals of instruction and classroom management receive considerable emphasis during this course.


Successful candidates receive the Introduction to Introduction to Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing Instructor at this level.

The Introduction to Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing Instructor is certified to:

  • conduct an Introduction to Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing, Canoeing Basics and the Waterfront Skills courses
  • assist on an Intermediate Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing skills course
  • apprentice on an Intermediate Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing Instructor course (Advanced Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing skills certification required)

Instructors can transfer their certification to solo instructor by getting certification at a higher-level solo skills level and get a recommendation by an Instructor Trainer.

Course Prerequisites
  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Certification
    • Paddle Canada Intermediate Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing skills, or equivalent skills and knowledge with permission of the course instructor.
  • Experience
    • Experience beyond that of an Introduction to Tandem or Solo Lake Canoeing skills course.

How to Register for an Instructor Course

  1. Contact the course director/organization and register with them first.
  2. Register yourself as an instructor candidate member with Paddle Canada by following these steps:
    • Are you existing Paddle Canada member or a past skill course student? Login to your account and follow the instructor candidate link there.
    • Are you brand new to Paddle Canada? Proceed to the Instructor Candidate membership form.
