Lake Canoe (Includes Waterfront and Canoeing Basics)

From our Waterfront to our advanced Lake Skills programs, the Paddle Canada Lake Canoe program is designed to introduce paddlers to the activity of canoeing. Emphasis is placed on boat control and teaching the participants the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and have fun while on the water.

 

Skills Program Descriptions

Waterfront Canoeing Skills Tandem

Aim

The Waterfront Tandem Program is designed to provide knowledge and skills necessary for “beachfront” (80×100 m) paddling activities with emphasis on canoeing in a camp style environment. Skills and safety are taught through use of fun games and activities.

There is no participant certification for this program.

Canoeing Basic Skills

Aim

Participants are introduced to paddling with a partner close to shore on sheltered bodies of water. Rescue options are discussed at this level and can be demonstrated by the instructor.

Lake Canoe Safety and Rescue Clinic

Aim

This clinic provides the opportunity to practice commonly used shore and lake rescue skills such as knowledge, and manoeuvres of rescuing paddlers and equipment. The clinic does not replace other training such as Swiftwater Rescue Training (SRT) or similar training.

Prerequisites

Canoeing Basics or permission of Instructor.

2 to 4 hours (for each level) or up to 1 day

Lake Canoe Skills Introduction Tandem

Aim

Novice paddlers are introduced to paddling with a partner in sheltered calm waters and basic land and water rescue techniques.

Lake Canoe Skills Intermediate Tandem

Aim

Participants paddle with a partner on open lake waters and perform skills and manoeuvres with greater refinement and demonstrate confidence in open water environments. Candidates will develop greater awareness of environmental hazards and how to avoid/react to those hazards.

Prerequisites

Introduction to Lake Tandem, or permission of instructor based on proof of prior learning of equivalent skill and knowledge.

Lake Canoe Skills Advanced Tandem

Aim

Participants paddle with a partner in open lake waters, to show confidence and ability to paddle in dynamic paddling environments, thus allowing to travel longer distances on open water, and to exhibit leadership that will enable the planning and execution of a day trip in an open water environment in a variety of wind conditions.  The candidate will perform a variety of rescues, strokes, and manoeuvres with emphasis on precision, efficiency and control.

Prerequisites

Intermediate Lake Tandem or permission of Instructor based on proof of prior learning of equivalent skill and knowledge.

Lake Canoe Skills Introduction Solo

Aim

Novice paddlers are introduced to basic land and water rescue techniques in sheltered waters.The skills and knowledge gained at this level form the foundation necessary for confident and safe travel in calm, sheltered paddling environments.

Typical Course Length

One (1) day minimum however if candidates come into this program with Lake Tandem Skills Courses then the time for these courses can be reduce due to the duplicate theory material and paddling skill.

Lake Canoe Skills Intermediate Solo

Aim

Participants will expand their skills necessary to paddle solo on open lake waters, to perform skills and manoeuvres with greater refinement, to demonstrate confidence in open water environments, and to develop a greater awareness of environmental hazards and how to avoid/react to those hazards. Manoeuvres within the Intermediate program require greater precision and control.

Instructor Program Descriptions

Waterfront Canoeing Instructor

Aim

Candidates are considered a canoeist who has the knowledge and skill to teach and demonstrate all the necessary skills for the Waterfront program. The Waterfront Instructor will be able to safely implement a Waterfront Program for novice level canoeists in a designated calm flatwater environment.

Prerequisites

  • 16 years of age or more
  • Basic Tandem Paddling Skills

Lake Canoe Instructor Tandem

Aim

The instructor is able to teach Introduction Lake courses to tandem paddlers.  They can also teach Waterfront clinics and Canoeing Basics courses and assist on Intermediate Lake skill or instructor courses (partner with an instructor in their canoe).

Prerequisites

  • Intermediate Lake Tandem Skills or equivalent skills as evaluated by the Instructor Trainer
  • Lake Tandem Instructor Program Solo Requirement: Tandem Instructors must have the ability to safely manoeuvre a tandem canoe solo in a controlled manner demonstrating basic solo manoeuvres (such as forward straight lines, sideslips, pivots, and turns) toward and away from their paddling side in a tandem canoe.

Lake Canoe Instructor Intermediate Tandem

Aim

Instructor is able to teach Lake Canoe Intermediate and Introduction Tandem courses and assist on Lake Canoe Skills & Instructor Advanced Tandem.

Paddle Canada Lake Intro Instructor or Advanced Lake Tandem Skills or Equivalent Skills as evaluated by the Instructor Trainer

2 days minimum

Lake Canoe Instructor Advanced Tandem

Aim

The instructor is able to teach Lake Canoe Skills Advanced, Intermediate, Intro Tandem skill courses, Waterfront and Canoeing Basics. The instructor may assist Lake Canoe Intro, Intermediate or Advanced Instructor courses.

  • Lake Canoe Intermediate Instructor Tandem

Lake Canoe Instructor Solo

Aim

The instructor is able to teach Lake Canoe Skills Intro Solo and assist on Lake Canoe Instructor Solo

The Instructor is able to teach Lake Canoe Skills Introduction and Intermediate Solo and assist on Lake Canoe Instructor Intermediate or Introduction Solo

Lake Canoe Instructor Advanced Solo

Aim

The instructor is able to teach Lake Canoe Skills Introduction, Intermediate and Advanced Solo and can assist on Lake Canoe Instructor Introduction, Intermediate and Advanced Solo.

  • Paddle Canada Lake Advanced Tandem or Solo Skills Or Equivalent Skills as evaluated by the Instructor Trainer
  • First Aid and CPR (16 hour)

Instructor Trainer Development Stream

The Instructor-Trainer teaches others how to teach the different levels of the Lake Canoe program.

The candidate apprentices on instructor courses and is assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the mentorship process. The IT Apprentice must assist on at least two (2) Lake Canoe Instructor courses and have taught two (2) skill courses at their highest Instructor level in last 4 years.
