The Canoe Poling programs cover the unique skills and knowledge to successfully navigate your canoe not by paddle – but by pole. The program emphasizes balance and boat control while teaching participants the necessary skills and knowledge to safely pole to their destination.

Skills Program Descriptions

Canoe Poling Skills Introduction

Aim

To introduce candidates to solo canoe poling on Class I water.

Prerequisites

None

Canoe Poling Skills Intermediate

Aim

To expand knowledge and skills in moving water, including the ability to utilize the pole in best depth conditions (shallower water) and to utilize slow water in ascending and descending a river.

Prerequisites

Some Intro Moving Water knowledge/paddling skills would be an asset.

Typical Course Length

8-14 hours*

*Minimum hours may be reduced at the discretion of the course instructor taking into account course participant experience, skills, knowledge, etc. Rationale for this is that they will have already covered some of the safety and skills items in the previous course plus what course participants may bring.

Canoe Poling Skills Advanced

Aim

To expand knowledge and skill so participants can gain greater control and precision in more challenging moving water conditions. This level represents the highest skill level course for canoe poling.

Prerequisites

Intermediate Canoe Poling or comparable skills and experience – at the discretion of course instructor.

Some Intermediate Moving Water Solo Skills are an asset.

Instructor Program Descriptions

Canoe Poling Instructor to Advanced

Process

Solo Canoe Poling Instructor and Advanced Canoe Poling Instructor are instructor level courses presented by Paddle Canada. Members wishing to qualify must apply to Paddle Canada to do so and/or contact the Paddle Canada office for details of the application process and requirement.

Solo Canoe Poling Instructor courses are offered by Paddle Canada Canoe Poling instructor trainers and must be registered and sanctioned by Paddle Canada.

Instructor Expectations

A Canoe Poling instructor is expected:

  • To promote the development of the Paddle Canada Canoe Poling program
  • To promote the development of canoe poling as a separate discipline of recreational canoeing

Prerequisites

A Canoe Poling instructor must be:

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Have current Paddle Canada and Regional Member Association membership
  • Have Paddle Canada Intermediate Canoe Poling, equivalent certification or comparable skills, First Aid and experience (with the permission of the course instructor)
  • It is strongly recommended that all poling instructors have, in addition to their canoe qualifications, some qualifications in swimming and CPR

An Advanced Canoe Poling instructor must be:

  • Minimum age: 18
  • Have current Paddle Canada and Regional Member Association membership
  • Have Paddle Canada Advanced Canoe Poling, First Aid, equivalent certification or comparable skills and experience (with the permission of the course instructor)
  • Any other qualifications required for instructors are as per Paddle Canada policies
