Aim
This Moving Water Advanced Tandem course further develops complex tandem whitewater river manoeuvres.

The successful MOVING WATER ADVANCED TANDEM candidate is considered an expert whitewater river canoeist, capable of performing advanced shore and water-based river rescues, including self-rescue. The candidate is able to perform advanced whitewater river manoeuvres with proficiency in Class III rapids, can confidently lead a small group of paddlers down a Class III rapid.

Prerequisites
Candidate must have Moving Water Intermediate Tandem (no or permission of Instructor based on proof of prior learning of equivalent skill and knowledge).


Course Length
2 or more days

Class Ratio
1 Instructor : 8 Participants

Location
River or rapids (class III) as well as flatwater (lake, pond, etc.). This course can be partly conducted in a classroom and/or on flatwater (lake, pond, etc.).


Conditions
Class III rapids with up to moderate (average) wind.

SAFETY & RESCUE
Theory:
River Features
River Hazards (including boils, pinning obstacles, current seams, high water features)
River Reading
International River Classification
Proper Clothing (for whitewater paddling)
Rescue (simple unpinning methods ex. directional & vector pull, lever, etc.)
Advanced Rescue Systems (resources and courses)

Practical:
Self-rescue
Swimmer Rescues
Canoe Rescues (one end lift & flip, towing, bumping, etc.)


PADDLING SKILLS
General
Review Intermediate Moving Water Tandem Skills (as required)
Current Lines (height differential, boils, turbulent, reactionary, etc)
River Running Strategies
Using Current and River Features to Your Advantage

Strokes
Review and Refine Intermediate Whitewater Tandem Strokes
Blending, Combination, Variation, and Extension of Strokes

Manoeuvres (as dictated by location)
Review and Refine Intermediate Moving Water Tandem Items
Advanced Launching and Landings in Current
Jet Ferry (front)
Surfing* (back and side: control, defensive/recovery)
Holes* (side surfing, exiting, etc.)
Running Technical Rapids (rock gardens, etc.)
Running Drops and Ledges
Running Rapids Under Power
Running Complex Rapids
*for skill development, survival, defensive, or recovery

KNOWLEDGE
Advanced Rescue Equipment (gear and recourses and courses)
River Run (2-4 hours, if feasible)

Assessment
Activities focus on individual safety and proficient paddling in rapids. While there is a great deal to learn at this level, the activities should concentrate on personal progress and an awareness of the need for future learning. Paddlers should leave the course encouraged to continue their learning and aware of their individual limitations.
