Aim
This Canoe tripping course introduces the canoeist to camping skills that are required to make the trip safe and enjoyable on waterways they are skilled to travel on.

Upon Successful Completion
The Canoe Tripping Skills Introduction Tandem and Solo is certified to:

Prerequisites
Lake Canoe Skills Intermediate Tandem and/or
Introduction to Canoeing Skills Tandem for venue location.
Recommended 16 or more hour First Aid Course

Course Length
A minimum of 2 days plus 1 over night canoe trip is required. Candidates should lead for a minimum of half a day each.

  • Tandem and/or Solo Canoe Rescues (canoe over canoe, towing, etc.): in controlled situations
  • Camping Skills
  • Packing (personal, group, kitchen, dry bags, barrels, waterproofing, etc.)
  • Loading & Unloading a Canoe
  • Portaging
  • Campsite Selection
  • Tent Pitching
  • Basic Tarps
  • Basic Menu Planning
  • Portable Stove Use
  • Basic Camp Cooking (stove, firebox, fire, or no fire or stove)
  • Camp Kitchen (including set up, food storage, hygiene, and food safety)
  • Drinking Water Options (storage, filtration and purification)
  • Campfire Options (open fire, firebox, non-fire options, etc.)
  • Axe, Saw & Knife Use (basic knowledge and if or when to use)
  • Knots (Reef, Bowline, Sheet Bend, Trucker's Hitch with Two Half Hitches, Taut-line)
  • Personal Hygiene (bathing, washing stations, bathroom etiquette, etc.)
  • Human Waste Management (latrines, cat holes, portable, permanent, etc.)
  • Grey Water Disposal
  • Garbage
  • Knowledge
  • Canoe tripping Canoes (features, etc.)
  • Rigging a Basic Canoe tripping Canoe
  • Personal Gear
  • Group Gear
  • Basic Kits (repair, first aid, survival)

  • Trip Planning (pre, trip plan, float plan, risk and crisis management, post trip evaluation, etc.)
  • Trip Reports (log, journal, pre-, during, post-, etc.)
  • Trip Leadership
  • Basic Weather Awareness, Resources (obtaining forecasts), Trends, etc.
  • Local Canoe Routes and Resources (front country)
  • Local Abiotic (identification, information, and resources on non-living features)
  • Local Biotic (identification, information, and resources on living things)
  • Local Cultural (historical beginnings of recreation canoe canoe tripping)
  • Participation on a Canoe Tour (min. 1 night)
