Aim To offer a national certification for Big Canoe Skills Introduction (Big Canoe Paddlers) and Big Canoe Skills Intermediate (Big Canoe Intermediate Leaders).
Upon Successful Completion The Big Canoe Instructor Intermediate is certified to:
Teach the following courses:
Big Canoe Skills Introduction
Big Canoe Skills Intermediate
Assist and/or Apprentice (Mentorship) on the following courses:
Big Canoe Instructor Intermediate
Big Canoe Instructor Advanced
Prerequisites Intermediate Lake Tandem Instructor,
Intermediate Lake Solo Instructor or strong solo skills,
Intermediate Skills Big Canoe (Leader), and
Advanced Skills Big Canoe (Leader)
Course Length 2.5 days
Class Ratio 1 Instructor : 8 Participants
Location Pond or Lake or Ocean or Rivers (with a current no faster than walking speed)
Distance from shore: no further from shore that the group (weakest swimmer) is comfortable swimming, or have enough canoes for an easy rescue (3 canoes) or have a safety boat.
Conditions Ocean (very sheltered, current no faster than walking speed, with little or no wind)
River (no hazards, current no faster than walking speed)
Program Overview Evening: Review and must pass Intermediate and Advanced skills component
Full day one: review of Intermediate course curriculum, teaching, and practising rescues and procedures.
Full day two co-instructing an Intermediate Big Canoe Leader Course.
Assessment Candidates must be able to demo 80% competency at an Intermediate Big Canoe Leader level.
Successful completion of the Intermediate Big Canoe Leader Course as mentioned above.
